![]() ![]() Approximately 8% of children ages 6 months to 12 years with AOM have acute bullous myringitis. The pathogen may infect the tympanic membrane alone (primary myringitis) or cause AOM or externa with secondary involvement of the tympanic membrane (secondary myringitis). Acute bullous or hemorrhagic myringitis can be the consequence of a bacterial infection such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Staphylococcus species, or a viral infection such as influenza or herpes zoster. Myringitis is an inflammatory condition of the tympanic membrane and can be acute or chronic.
